About NHL Tracker

The standings tell you a team's record, but not how long the fans have been waiting.

How it is organised

Each of the four divisions has its own tracker, and this site ties them together. The division trackers hold the detail: standings, schedules, results, box scores, weekly recaps and head-to-head records. This one holds the league-wide view, including all 32 teams ranked by how long since they last won.

How the counter works

The number counts calendar days between a team's most recent win and today. A team that won yesterday reads 1. A team that won earlier today reads 0. Preseason games are ignored; regular season and playoff wins both count, including wins in overtime or a shootout. An overtime or shootout loss is still a loss, even though it earns a point in the standings. Over the summer the count keeps running from the last win of the season before, which is why the numbers climb past 150 by opening night.

Records and standings

Records read wins, regulation losses, then overtime and shootout losses, so 10–5–2 is ten wins, five losses in regulation and two after regulation. Division order follows points, two for a win and one for an overtime or shootout loss, with the league's tie-breakers after that: fewer games played, then regulation wins.

The longer waits

Each team page also counts the days since the club's last playoff win, worked out from ESPN's game records, which go back to the 1994 playoffs, and since its last Stanley Cup.

How often it updates

While games are in progress, scores refresh about once a minute. On game days, meaning any time a game is within twelve hours, everything refreshes every five minutes, and every thirty minutes otherwise. A finished game updates the score, the record, the standings and the drought counter at the same time.

Where the data comes from

Scores, schedules, box scores and standings all come from ESPN's public NHL data. Puck-drop times are shown in local time at the arena, with the zone spelled out, so a 7:00 start in Toronto reads 7:00 PM EDT no matter which team you follow.
